The Fier is one of the most important rivers of Haute-Savoie.
It takes source at the feet of the Mount CHARVIN at
a height of 2019 meters. It's gradient is 1.760 m for
a 70 km lenght. It flows into the Rhône downstream
of Seyssel.
10 km far from the west of ANNECY, it digged "the
GORGES DU FIER", one of the most grandiose phenomenon
of erosion by a river.
The GORGES DU FIER are classed among the most attractive
curiosities of the french Alps. Since 1869, it's accessible
to public by a footbridge suspended 27 meters above
the torrent.
Inside this gigantic fault, we discover many potholes,
that the river digged for thousand years.
When leaving the Gorge, the river threads one way through
a labyrinth of rocks. It's a wide lapiaz with tormented
shapes called "Sea of rocks"
Arriving on the "Sea of Rocks", we can read
the legend of the little page. It tells the tragic story
of a page, a noble maiden and a knight.
