Against the rocky outcrop, the flood water scale indicates the height of water during the heaviest floods.

At the lowest water level, the flow of the Fier is about 3m3 per second.

During heavy rains it can reach 300 to 500 m3/second.

The crevasse is so narrow that when it rains heavily, the water can rise up to 26 metres in a few hours.

Les Gorges du Fier

The return journey also uses the "high-wire footbridges".

After the exit gate, in a room of the old ticket office, you can look at some photographs (in particular the floods of 14.02.1990).

The Fier is one of the most important rivers of Haute-Savoie. It takes source at the feet of the Mount CHARVIN at a height of 2019 meters. It's gradient is 1.760 m for a 70 km lenght. It flows into the Rhône downstream of Seyssel.

10 km far from the west of ANNECY, it digged "the GORGES DU FIER", one of the most grandiose phenomenon of erosion by a river.

The GORGES DU FIER are classed among the most attractive curiosities of the french Alps. Since 1869, it's accessible to public by a footbridge suspended 27 meters above the torrent.

Inside this gigantic fault, we discover many potholes, that the river digged for thousand years.

When leaving the Gorge, the river threads one way through a labyrinth of rocks. It's a wide lapiaz with tormented shapes called "Sea of rocks"

Arriving on the "Sea of Rocks", we can read the legend of the little page. It tells the tragic story of a page, a noble maiden and a knight.
